Pressing Live Rosin-SOP

Pressing live rosin is a 100% solventless extraction process that converts fresh-frozen trichomes into a pure, terpene-rich extract. Unlike traditional flower rosin, live rosin is made by pressing ice water hash (bubble hash) that was extracted from freshly harvested, frozen cannabis plants.

Here is the step-by-step Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for pressing live rosin:


Step 1: Starting Material (Freeze-Dried Bubble Hash)

  1. Fresh-Frozen Harvest: Flower is harvested and immediately frozen (to \(-40^\circ\text{F}\)) within two hours of cut to lock in volatile monoterpenes like myrcene and limonene.
  2. Ice Water Extraction: The frozen biomass is washed in an ice-water bath to mechanically separate the trichome heads. The 73-micron to 120-micron (or 45μ–159u full-spectrum) collection fraction yields the highest quality 5-star or 6-star hash.
  3. Freeze Drying: The wet bubble hash is processed in a freeze dryer to sublimate all moisture without exposing delicate trichomes to heat. Never press wet hash, as moisture causes severe spitting, sizzle, and dark, degraded rosin.

Step 2: Bagging & Preparation

  1. Micron Bag Selection: Pack the dry bubble hash into fine 25-micron (\(25\ \mu\text{m}\)) or 37-micron (\(37\ \mu\text{m}\)) rosin filter bags. This fine mesh keeps microscopic plant particulates inside while letting pure liquid resin pass through.
  2. Double Bagging: Slide the filled 25μ bag inside a second 25μ or 90μ bag with the seam folded in the opposite direction. Double-bagging prevents "blowouts" under hydraulic pressure.
  3. Parchment Setup: Place the packed bag inside a folded sheet of unbleached, high-grade parchment paper, leaving a directional fold at the front so the flowing rosin drains away from the heated plates immediately.

Step 3: The Pressing Parameters (Temp, Pressure, Time)

Because bubble hash contains pure trichome heads without structural plant fibers, it requires significantly lower temperatures and lighter pressure than flower rosin:

  • Temperature Range: Set your heated plates between \(140^\circ\text{F}\) and \(180^\circ\text{F}\) (\(60^\circ\text{C}\)–\(82^\circ\text{C}\)).
    • Lower Temps (\(140^\circ\text{F}\)–\(160^\circ\text{F}\)): Yields a light, creamy badder texture with maximum terpene preservation.
    • Slightly Higher Temps (\(165^\circ\text{F}\)–\(180^\circ\text{F}\)): Flow is faster with slightly higher yields, but lighter monoterpenes begin to volatilize.
  • Pre-Heat (30–60 Seconds): Lower the top plate until it just touches the parchment-wrapped bag without applying gauge pressure. Let the hash absorb heat for 30 to 60 seconds so the resin melts and liquefies before applying force.
  • Pressure & Ramp-Up (90–180 Seconds): Slowly increase hydraulic pressure over 1.5 to 3 minutes. Aim for roughly 300 to 700 PSI on the bag surface. Applying pressure too quickly will cause a blowout.
  • Flow & Release: Watch the golden oil stream out from between the plates. Once the flow slows to a trickle, release the press immediately to prevent cooking the rosin.

Step 4: Collection & Post-Processing (Curing)

  1. Collection: Allow the parchment paper to cool briefly. Using a clean, stainless-steel dab tool, collect the fresh "fresh-press" rosin.
  2. Curing Options:
    • Cold Cure (Badder Consistency): Seal the fresh press in a glass jar and store it at room temperature (\(65^\circ\text{F}\)–\(70^\circ\text{F}\)) or in a refrigerator for 1 to 2 weeks. As it steeps, the THCa will naturally nucleate, transforming the translucent sap into a pale, creamy, badder/butter consistency.
    • Warm Cure / Jar Tech (Rosin Jam or Vape Cart Liquid): Seal the fresh press in a heat-safe glass jar and place it on a heating pad at \(150^\circ\text{F}\)–\(190^\circ\text{F}\) (\(65^\circ\text{C}\)–\(88^\circ\text{C}\)) for 24 to 48 hours. This partially or fully decarboxylates the THCa into liquid THC, creating a flowable oil ideal for solventless vape cartridges.
