Emergency Protocol: What to Do When You Find Bud Rot (Botrytis cinerea)
Welcome back to our educational cultivation hub. Bud rot (Botrytis cinerea) is a devastating necrotrophic fungus that destroys cannabis harvests from the inside out. Despite your best preventative efforts, microclimatic spikes or environmental anomalies can sometimes trigger an active outbreak. If you discover mold on your buds, immediate biosecurity protocols and environmental remediation are required to save the rest of your crop.
1. Early Detection & The Warning Signs
Early detection is critical to saving the crop. During the mid-to-late flowering phase, you must perform daily physical inspections of the dense flower sites. Wearing fresh nitrile gloves, gently pry open dense colas to inspect the interior stem core. Look for these early alarms:
- Foliar Alarms: A single yellowing or wilting sugar leaf protruding from an otherwise healthy flower cluster.
- Pistil Discoloration: Premature browning and withering of the pistils.
- Textural Softening: A soft, mushy, or "soggy-brown" texture at the base of the bud.
- Olfactory Signals: A distinct musty, damp-basement, or "wet-sock" odor.
2. Surgical Removal (Active Grow)
If you confirm an infection, you must surgically remove the affected tissue immediately to stop the spread.
- Sterilize: Sterilize all cutting tools with 70% isopropyl alcohol or a 10% bleach solution before and after every single cut.
- Cut Deep: Cut the stem at least 1 to 4 inches (2 to 10 centimeters) below the lowest visible margin of the infected tissue. You must sacrifice healthy surrounding tissue to ensure microscopic, dormant spores are completely removed.
- Containment: Place the excised bud directly into a sealable plastic bag while still inside the grow space. Seal it tightly before carrying it out to prevent airborne spores from escaping into your facility. Gloves worn during the surgery must be discarded immediately, and all tools must undergo a final sterilization cycle.
3. Proper Disposal & Advanced Infections
Never toss infected waste into a standard open trash can, a compost bin, or leave it on the floor of the greenhouse. To completely neutralize the spore load, the infected material must be completely burned or buried under a minimum of one foot of soil.
If a plant exhibits advanced colonization—where more than 50% of the main colas are soft, slimy, or displaying active, dusty gray sporulation—the entire plant is unsalvageable. You must bag the entire plant, cut it at the base, and destroy it immediately to protect the remaining crop.
4. Environmental Remediation
After removing the infected material, you must aggressively alter your microclimate to stop remaining spores from metabolizing and spreading:
- Drop Humidity: Immediately drop the ambient relative humidity below 40% using dehumidifiers.
- Lower Temperature: Adjust your temperatures down to 60°F to 65°F (15°C to 18°C) to slow the metabolic growth of the fungus.
- Maximize Airflow: Increase your exhaust fan speed to run continuous, high-volume air exchanges and ensure air purification systems are operating at peak capacity.
- Extend Light Cycles: Run your lights on an extended period during this remediation. This maintains plant transpiration, boosts metabolic energy, and prevents the sudden temperature drops that create condensation (dew) on the leaves, which is what triggers spore germination.
5. The Golden Rule: Never Consume Moldy Buds
Consuming, smoking, or vaporizing Botrytis-contaminated cannabis is highly dangerous and poses severe health risks. The fungus produces mycotoxins that can trigger severe allergic bronchopulmonary reactions, acute asthma attacks, and pulmonary hypersensitivity. In immunocompromised individuals or patients undergoing chemotherapy, inhaling these spores can cause systemic lung infections. Your health is never worth the risk, so all mold-affected flowers must be strictly discarded.
